A Binder’s Volume?

Although it can contain drawings, press clippings, and other objects, a binder’s volume is fundamentally a collection of sheet music bound together, usually put together by performers who select musical repertoires that are in vogue. Women and their families often compiled the music bound in these personal collections, which made part of women’s music culture in Colombian aristocratic circles, following societal conventions tied to notions of “good taste” and “fashion.” Women and sometimes men performed the repertoire found in these binder’s volumes for individual and collective leisure during social gatherings that took place in salons, ballrooms, or at home. Like US-American and European binder’s volumes, the contents of the Echeverría music albums mostly fall into two main categories: solo piano music, and selections for voice and piano.
